The first international network meeting of the Chinese Student Association on PVD Prevention (CSAPP)_ was held via Skype on May 29th, 9-10pm GMT. The meeting was hosted by Doctor Hua Luo, Fellow of the PVRI and CSAPP consultant, and attended by Prof. Ghazwan Butrous (Kent, UK), managing director of the Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute (PVRI), Doctor Qianqian Liu (Shenzhen, China), guest editor of international journal of cardiovascular diagnosis and treatment, Peng Yu (M.D., Beijing, China), president of CSAPP, and Yushu Liu (M.D., Beijing, China), CSAPP senior member.

To begin with, Doctor Luo briefly introduced the disciplinary history of pulmonary vascular diseases (PVD) in China. Five years ago, he established the Peking University (PKU) PVD Forum (www.pkupv.lingd.net) and launched a “working assistants” project for 8-year undergraduates majoring in Clinical Medicine, Basic Medicine and Stomatology. He prepared to set up the PKU-PVD center, with the aim to improve the professional qualities of young physicians and students by advocating knowledge and carrying out educational reforms on PVDs. The PKU-PVD center consists of three levels, of which the CSAPP is the most basic form. Doctor Luo emphasized that the center’s main focus for 2013 is to accelerate the process of students’ education and teaching and support PVD innovative projects.

This was followed by Dr. Peng Yu’s report on behalf of CSAPP. He mentioned that in the past five years, a number of students, including Zhengfei Lu, Bin Gui, Chunlei Song, Si Li, Wen Yang, Peng Yu, Jingwen Li and others, have been involved in the preparations of the CSAPP and PKU-PVD Center. They have accumulated valuable experience with which to improve students with self-education and organizational management capabilities. In March 2013, under the guidance of Doctor Luo and the aid of leaders of Peking University Health Science Center, Doctor Peng Yu formally established the first frontier association for PKU medical students: the Chinese Student Association on PVD Prevention (CSAPP), which attracted a lot of attentions inside and outside of the school. CSAPP is located in the Peking University Health Science Center and consists of 20 student members. It aims at spreading PVD prevention knowledge in the colleges, promoting healthy lifestyles, and increasing public awareness of pulmonary vascular diseases through case discussions and social practices.

Ghazwan Butrous, Professor of Cardiopulmonary Sciences at the University of Kent, is one of the founders and leaders of international authoritative organizations PVRI. He responded by praising the enthusiasm and innovative spirit of the Peking University young physicians, and inquired about the status of thePKU-PVD Center.

Doctor Luo answered that the first thought of the centre came to him 5 years ago, and sparked the long process of building the PKU-PVD Center. The center consists of two parts, namely the Peking-center and the Shenzhen branch. The former is led mainly by cardiovascular and respiratory specialists with multi-disciplinary participation in PKU, whilst the latter is managed by Doctor Luo’s multi-disciplinary collaborative group, The Shenzhen branch is located in Peking University Shenzhen Hospital in the south of China, a very modern and beautiful city near Hongkong. Doctor Luo spent his service time and holidays traveling between Peking and Shenzhen, actively promoting the PKU-PVD Center’s development. At present, the Shenzhen sub-centers receive about 200 cases of PAH patients within 5 years, whilst the entire PKU-PVD center is expected to receive more than 800 cases, covering most parts of the PVD spectrum.

Professor Ghazwan Butrous showed a strong interest in the establishment of the CSAPP, and expressed sincere hope that the CSAPP should become an example of students’ education in the international community. He followed this by an invitation to its key members to join the PVRI. He offered an international media platform for the PKU-PVD Center and CSAPP, and expressed anticipation of substantive cooperation with the center, PVRI and CSAPP. Professor Ghazwan Butrous will fly to Chongqing to participate in the Fourth International Forum of pulmonary circulation on July 19 to 21 2013. He hopes to have a good chat with PKU students and scholars at that time. Professor Butrous introduced his research project with Professor Yuesheng Li on pulmonary hypertension caused by schistosomiasis at Dongting Lake area, and expects CSAPP to become involved.

Finally, Doctor Luo summarized that this meeting is the first dialogue between CSAPP and international organizations, andis also the first time for young physicians and medical students to show their outstanding efforts. Their previous endeavor gained attention and interest from the international community, greatly inspiring the young scholars further. But at present there is a clear understanding that a big gap still exists with regards to the international community. To bridge this, the students need to improve the database of cases and promote the division of student societies. In short, they must grasp the opportunities and take challenges as a driving force for the coming years, and PVRI has shown itself an ally in this endeavor.

Acknowledgments:
Our deepest gratitude goes first and foremost to Professor Ghazwan Butrousfor his enthusiastic support and guidanceand to Doctor Qianqian Liu for her efforts and coordination on behalf of CSAPP.
